Stanwood, the Mainland Side of the Camano Bridge

Northern Snohomish County, the mainland side of the bridge to Camano Island.

Living in Stanwood

Stanwood sits in the far northwest corner of Snohomish County where the Stillaguamish River meets the salt water, on Highway 532 between I-5 and the bridge to Camano Island. It's the south end of my territory and the one town on this list that is not in Skagit, Island, or Whatcom County. It was incorporated in 1903, and for most of the last century it was actually two towns, Stanwood on the flats and East Stanwood in the depot district up by the railroad, which kept separate governments until the voters merged them in 1960. Locals still say which one they mean. Norwegian immigrants left their mark on the town, and the Stanwood Area Historical Society traces the Sons of Norway hall downtown back to 1914.

Downtown is 271st Street NW, where the city is in the middle of a real revitalization push it calls the Twin City Mile, running from City Hall Park on 270th to the Amtrak station on 271st, with the Stanwood Farmers Market on Fridays, Heritage Park and its skatepark, and Church Creek Park with its new hard-surface trail. Twin City Foods, the frozen-vegetable company, still keeps its headquarters on 269th Place NW.

The thing that makes Stanwood different from every other small town up here is the train. Amtrak Cascades stops at Stanwood station on Florence Way, at the end of the Twin City Mile, south to Everett and Seattle and north to Vancouver, two trains a day each direction on the June 2026 timetable. That is intercity rail, not commuter rail, and I'll say more about the difference below because it matters.

Stanwood neighborhoods and Camano Island

Stanwood and Camano function as one market with a bridge in the middle, so here's both sides.

  • Downtown Stanwood and the flats. The original town along 271st Street and the station block: older homes on town lots, walkable to the market and the train, on the low ground near the river, so the flood map comes first here.
  • East Stanwood. The second town, the depot district up by the railroad, with its own older core and the plats that have filled in around it.
  • The Cedarhome area, the north side. Newer subdivisions up off the flats around Cedarhome Elementary, in what the city itself calls the Cedarhome area. I brought a buyer to 284th Place NW up here in August 2023.
  • Camano Island: the north end. Over the Camano Gateway Bridge on 532, then the Utsalady side at the north end, with beach communities and Utsalady Elementary.
  • Camano Island: the west shore and south end. Saratoga Passage waterfront, Cama Beach Historical State Park and Camano Island State Park, and the Elger Bay and Mabana side toward the tip. Waterfront without a ferry, which is the whole pitch. Port Susan is on the east shore facing the mainland.
  • Utsalady, the north end of Camano. On Utsalady Bay at the north end of the island, with its own elementary school.
  • Lake Goodwin and Lake Howard. The lake communities south of Stanwood, and the two I know best. Lake living within reach of town and I-5; every lake home gets the same questions up front about water source, septic, and the shoreline.

Camano is 15.6 miles long and there's no ferry to it and no town on it; Stanwood is the town. Many Camano homes are on wells or community water and on septic, and a bluff lot on the beach side needs a geotechnical look before you buy. Housing on the Stanwood side runs from the older homes downtown to newer plats on the hills.

Getting around from Stanwood, and the rail question

Highway 532 is the road: east to I-5, west over the bridge to Camano. I-5 south to Everett and Seattle is the daily drive for most of the working households here. Amtrak Cascades from Stanwood station is real and useful, but it runs on an intercity schedule, two trains a day each way on the June 2026 timetable, and Sound Transit's Sounder commuter trains do not come here. The Sounder N Line stops at Everett, Mukilteo, and Edmonds on its way to Seattle, and nowhere north of Everett. If someone tells you Stanwood has Sounder service, they're wrong, and I'd rather you hear it from me before you buy on that basis.

Island Transit runs fare-free buses from Camano through Stanwood to Skagit Station in Mount Vernon. Drive your commute at your hour before you commit; I-5 through Marysville and Everett has its own personality.

What's nearby, by name

Camano Island State Park and Cama Beach Historical State Park, across the bridge. Saratoga Passage and Port Susan. The Stillaguamish River and its delta. Stanwood station and the Amtrak Cascades. Mount Vernon's hospital, college, and Skagit Station to the north. Everett to the south. Whidbey Island across the passage, reached by driving around through Deception Pass or by the Mukilteo ferry.

Stanwood or Mount Vernon: the honest trade-off

Mount Vernon is a small city with a county seat's list of services and two connector bus lines. Stanwood is a small town with a train station and an island attached. If your life points south to Everett or Seattle, Stanwood is closer to it and the Amtrak schedule can work for some. If your life points to Skagit County employers, Mount Vernon wins on geography. And if the point is the water without a ferry line, Camano is the answer and Stanwood is where you get groceries.

The Stanwood-Camano School District runs Stanwood High School and Lincoln Hill High School; Port Susan Middle School and Stanwood Middle School; Cedarhome, Stanwood, and Twin City elementary schools in Stanwood; and Elger Bay and Utsalady elementary schools on Camano. The middle and high schools are on the Stanwood side, so the secondary bus routes cross the bridge every day.

How I work Stanwood and Camano

DiAnn Sager Real Estate runs out of RE/MAX Gateway in Anacortes, and northern Snohomish County, Stanwood especially, has been part of my territory since 2018. Town lots, hillside plats, and island waterfront on wells and septic are three different transactions, and I run them differently. I've brought buyers to 32nd Avenue NW, Jensen Road, and 284th Place NW in Stanwood, and handled both sides of a Hill Park Court sale on Camano.

If you're selling, the free EPIC™ Home-Selling Report shows your equity position and three pricing paths. The campaign, drone included for waterfront, is on the selling your home page, and if you're rightsizing off a Camano beach place into something on one level, that's a move I've made with many clients. If you're buying, trading up from a town lot to the island is common here, and the sequence gets worked out before either transaction starts. Relocating for a Seattle-area job? We'll talk about the real commute first.

My current listings are on the listings page. North of here are Mount Vernon and La Conner. Tell me what you're thinking.

By the road from Stanwood

By the road from the middle of Stanwood, it is 29 miles to downtown Anacortes, 18 to the Burlington I-5 exit, 41 to downtown Bellingham, 53 to downtown Seattle. These are road miles from OpenStreetMap routing, measured September 2026, by road and not by ferry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Stanwood have Sounder commuter rail?

No. Stanwood has an Amtrak Cascades station with intercity trains south to Everett and Seattle and north to Vancouver. Sound Transit's Sounder N Line stops only at Everett, Mukilteo, and Edmonds between Seattle and Everett. The June 2026 Cascades timetable gives Stanwood two trains a day each way; plan your commute on the real timetable, not on a rumor.

Is Camano Island accessible without a ferry?

Yes. The Camano Gateway Bridge carries Highway 532 from Stanwood onto the island, and it's the only road on or off. That's the reason people choose Camano over Whidbey for waterfront: you drive home.

What schools serve Stanwood and Camano Island?

The Stanwood-Camano School District. Elementary schools are in both places (Cedarhome, Stanwood, and Twin City in Stanwood; Elger Bay and Utsalady on Camano), and the middle and high schools, including Stanwood High School, are on the Stanwood side.

What's the flood situation in Stanwood?

Stanwood sits at the mouth of the Stillaguamish River, and the low ground near the river carries flood-map questions that the higher neighborhoods and East Stanwood don't. I pull the FEMA map for every property before you write.
