Retiring in Anacortes WA: Why So Many Retirees End Up Here

August 12, 2026

The Lifestyle Fits

Anacortes is walkable enough to run your daily errands without a car, but never so dense that it feels like a city. Hiking, kayaking, cycling, and fishing are all close by, with plenty of gentle, mostly flat terrain. Add the farmers market, the waterfront, and the coffee shops on Commercial Avenue, and daily life here is genuinely pleasant without requiring a lot of money or effort.

Island Health

Having Island Health (formerly Island Hospital) right in town matters. It's a full-service community hospital with emergency care, surgical services, and a good range of specialists, so routine care doesn't mean a drive to Burlington or Mount Vernon. For more specialized care, Bellingham and Seattle are within reach.

The Housing Math Works for Downsizers

I sit down with a lot of people who are selling a larger home in California or suburban Seattle, and the equity conversation usually goes better than they expect. That equity often buys a comfortable single-story home here outright, or close to it. I'll be honest with you, though: single-level and zero-step homes move fast in this market. If that's what you're after, we should start watching the inventory before you ever list your current home.

It's Easy to Get Involved

What I hear over and over from people who made this move: it's easy to belong here. The arts community, the historical museum, the conservation land trusts, the sailing and kayaking clubs. There are ways to be part of something without fighting through bureaucracy or paying steep membership fees.

One Honest Consideration

If your people are in California or Texas or back east, Anacortes is remote. Flights out of Bellingham are limited, and Seattle is doable but not quick. The folks who love it here are comfortable with that distance, already have people they love nearby, or are ready to build community from scratch. That's a conversation worth having honestly before you move, and I'm glad to have it with you.
