Moving to Anacortes from Seattle: An Honest Comparison

The Commute Question

Anacortes is about 80 miles north of Seattle, and commuting daily is not realistic for most people. The drive runs 1.5 to 2+ hours each way depending on traffic, and there's no commuter rail. If you're fully remote, this isn't an issue. If you need to be in Seattle two or three days a week, it's manageable. Five days a week? You're going to burn out. I'd rather tell you that now than after you've moved.

What You Get for the Same Money

The home you'd buy for $800K in a Seattle suburb often comes with less square footage, a smaller lot, and neighbors ten feet away. Here, that same budget gets you three or four bedrooms, a view lot, a garage, and actual breathing room between you and the house next door. The value gap is real.

What You’ll Drive South For

Convenience. Anacortes has what daily life needs: grocery stores, restaurants, healthcare, a good library. If you want Ikea, a major airport, or fifty restaurant options on a Friday night, you're driving south. Most people who make this move tell me they stopped caring about that within a year.

The Culture Shift

Anacortes is a working town, with fishing boats and refineries and people who have lived here their entire lives. I'm one of them. It's friendlier, slower, and more real than a resort town, and the people who thrive here are the ones who wanted exactly what this town is.

My Honest Advice

Visit more than once before you buy. Come on a Tuesday in November, not just a Saturday in July. Eat at the local spots, talk to people at the farmers market, drive the neighborhoods at dusk. If you still love it after that, you're probably the right fit, and I'd love to help you land here.
