Nobody Warns You About the Ferry Line

The first thing you notice when you start looking at homes here is the ferry terminal. It sits at the west edge of town like a promise: daily sailings to San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez. What the listing photos don't show you is a summer Friday afternoon, when half of Seattle heads for the islands at the same time. Lines wrap around the terminal and out onto the highway. I've lived here my whole life and I still plan my Fridays around it. If you work in town or can flex your schedule, it's no big deal. If you'll be commuting off the island every day, you learn fast to leave early or stay late.

The Fog Is Part of the Deal

We sit in a rain shadow, so Anacortes gets noticeably less rain than Seattle. The trade is fog. It rolls in off the water in the mornings, especially in spring and fall. Some of my clients find it moody and beautiful. Others need a season to make peace with it. Either way, you'll get used to watching it burn off by mid-morning and reveal one of the prettiest views in the Pacific Northwest.

The Farmers Market Will Spoil You

The Anacortes Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings from spring through fall at the Depot Arts Center on R Avenue. Fresh Dungeness crab, local oysters, handmade pasta, flowers, lavender from the islands. I'll warn you now: after a few Saturdays there, the grocery store starts to feel like a chore.

People Stay Here

What strikes the buyers I work with, especially the ones coming from bigger cities, is how long people have lived here. You'll meet folks on their third generation in the same neighborhood, and business owners who know your name by your second visit. There's a small-town gravity to Anacortes. It pulls people in and keeps them. It's also why homes move fast when they do come available, especially waterfront and island views.

What Does It Actually Cost to Live Here?

Anacortes sits between the affordability of the Skagit Valley and the premium of the islands. You'll find more value per square foot here than our neighbors to the south, but waterfront and view properties command serious premiums.
